PROPOSED $250,000 FLORIDA SUPER HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
What Every Florida Homeowner Should Know
A Major Property Tax Proposal Could Significantly Increase Homestead Tax Savings
Florida voters will soon have the opportunity to vote and approve approve a constitutional amendment that would substantially increase the Homestead Exemption for qualifying Florida homeowners.
Key Highlights
🏡 Current Florida Residents
If you are a Florida resident and qualify for Homestead Exemption on or before December 31, 2026, you may qualify for the proposed Super Homestead Exemption if approved by Florida voters.
Proposed Timeline
January 1, 2027
- Homestead Exemption increases to $150,000 for eligible homeowners.
January 1, 2028
- Homestead Exemption increases to $250,000 for eligible homeowners.
- The exemption would then increase annually based on inflation.
New Florida Residents After December 31, 2026
Individuals establishing Florida residency after 2026 would receive:
- $50,000 Homestead Exemption for four years.
- After which they will be eligible for the $250,000 Super Homestead Exemption, if the proposal is adopted. If thinking about becoming a Florida Resident in 5 months (2027), why wait?
Why This Matters
A larger Homestead Exemption may reduce the taxable value of your home for many local (non-school) property taxes, potentially lowering your annual property tax bill.
If you are considering purchasing a home in Florida and establishing Florida residency, understanding the proposed timeline could be an important part of your financial and tax planning.
